HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU SPRAY TAN?
Expert Spray Tan Tips: How Often is Too Often?
How long do spray tans last? Is there such thing as spray tanning too often? How often should I spray tan?
These are questions that I frequently get asked from clients. Here, I’ll answer these questions and go over some spray tan tips on how to best maintain your L.A. Sun Spray Tan.
How long do spray tans last?
Spray tans sit on the top layer of your skin and as your skin naturally exfoliates, your tan goes with it. The “life span” of a sunless tan depends on your skin’s natural exfoliation. On average, spray tans last about 7-10 days and can last longer when properly maintained. Pre and post care are extremely important to increase the longevity of your tan.
PRE CARE: For the best spray tan results, be sure to shave, shower and exfoliate your skin the night before your spray tan session. Avoid using any oils, Dove products and bar soap when exfoliating. The best way to exfoliate is to apply a shower gel to bath mitts and scrub. You can find bath mitts at most drug stores including Rite Aide, CVS and Target. After exfoliating be sure to moisturize with a lotion, no oils. This is very important because hydrated healthy skin will retain the tan longer! The day of your appointment, don’t do anything to your skin.
POST CARE: When showering regularly, use a mild body wash and apply with your hands. Do not use any scrubs, shower poufs or bar soaps, as these will strip away your sunless color. Avoid Dove products and choose a body wash that is as natural as possible. My studio carries a great body wash that is made for spray tanning and helps to maintain the spray tan longer.
It’s best to avoid long hot showers. Always pat dry your skin after showering and moisturize daily with a basic mineral oil free body lotion- cocoa butter and shea butter work great. Pure coconut oil is also a great moisturizer for your spray tans. Apply these products immediately post-shower, while your skin is still damp, to lock in moisture. Remember, hydrated healthy skin retains the tan longer!
So, how often should you spray tan?
How often you spray tan depends on you. I have clients that come in every week, some every other week, and some only for special occasions. If you want to constantly stay tan, having a spray tan appointment every 7-12 days is ideal to maintain your glow while getting the most out of each tan. During your spray tan session, I’ll give you a few more tips ( not noted here ) on how to maintain your glow in between spray tan sessions.
While there isn’t such a thing as spray tanning too often, I recommend that you detox and heavily exfoliate your skin once every 4-5 weeks. We want to get all of the old spray tan off, and start fresh when you get your next L.A. Sun Spray Tan. Detoxing is good for your skin and especially helps with hydration. You can detox by going swimming, sitting in a hot tub or taking a steam. Baby oil is good for detoxing as it swells the skin’s surface making the skin more pliable so that self tanner will come off. Mix baby oil with a bit of lemon, let it sit on your skin for about 10 minutes and then get in the shower and scrub with bath mitts.
L.A. Sun Spray Tan uses all natural spray tan solutions filled with vitamins to help nourish and enrich your skin. They are paraben free, never tested on animals and made in the USA. My spray tan solutions consist of only the most natural ingredients, Eco-Cert organic DHA and have the least amount of ingredients possible.
Consistency is key to keeping that flawless sunless glow. Whether you want a fresh tan every week or a subtle boost for special events, we’ll help you find the right rhythm. At L.A. Sun Spray Tan, we tailor your tanning plan to fit your lifestyle—so you never have to second-guess when to book.

GET YOUR SKIN READY: ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR THE PERFECT SPRAY TAN
One important thing to remember about spray tanning is that hydration is key.
One important thing to remember about spray tanning is that hydration is key.
The way spray tans work is - it sits on the top layer of your skin and attaches to well hydrated skin cells. When you have dry skin, the spray tan solution has a much harder time grabbing.
So what can we do to get the most out of our spray tans? I cannot stress enough the importance of exfoliating and moisturing the NIGHT BEFORE coming in for your spray tan session.
What should you use to exfoliate? The best recommendation I can give is to use a pair of bath gloves, which you should be able to find at Target, CVS, Rite Aide or any other major drugstore. I also carry exfoliating mitts made just for spray tanning that you can purchase at my studio. These special mitts also work great to exfoliate your old spray tan off. Apply a mild shower gel to the gloves and SCRUB!
What shower gel works best? I personally like to use Suave - it is not oily, has minimal ingredients and inexpensive. Dove products and bar soap should not be used, they can leave a film on your skin making the spray tan streaky and less effective. Another thing - wax or shave now (after exfoliating) so your skin has time to recover.
After exfoliating, moisturize with a lotion, no oils. You see, when you follow the prep the night before, your natural oils come out and react better with the spray tan. Not only that, you're skin will be much more hydrated and you don't have to do any prep the same day as your appointment! Cheers to that!
Another thing you can start doing today, is drink plenty of water and take your recommended daily dose of Omega 3. I get mine from fish oil pills and it has helped wonders, not only for my skin but for my dry eyes and hair as well. And for the vegans out there, there are Vegan Omega 3 options available.
And last but not least, be sure to moisturize every day. Make it a part of your daily routine! After showering is best, when your bathroom is steamy and your pores are open, allowing the moisturizer to really lock in and hydrate. Basic, all natural products work best. I love to use pure coconut oil, cocoa butter or shea butter. Follow these tips and your skin and spray tan will thank you!
Dealing with dry skin doesn’t mean you have to miss out on a flawless tan. At L.A. Sun Spray Tan, we prep and guide you through every step so you can achieve a smooth, even glow that lasts. Let us help you glow and feel good in your skin.
