Express Spray Tans: Pros, Cons & Tips

Express Spray Tans: Are They Worth It?

If you’ve ever needed a spray tan fast - for a last-minute event, wedding weekend, or spontaneous trip - you’ve probably heard about express spray tans. They promise flexibility, faster rinse times, and the same natural glow as a traditional tan, without having to sleep in bronzer.

After specializing in custom airbrush tanning in L.A. for over 12 years, I’ve seen express tans become the go-to option for clients with busy schedules. And while they’re often misunderstood, they’re absolutely worth it when done correctly.

What Makes an Express Tan Different

An express spray tan uses a rapid-developing formula that allows you to rinse off much sooner, usually between two and four hours, depending on how deep you want your color. Unlike a standard spray tan, which stays on overnight, express formulas give you control over your rinse timing while still developing fully over the next 24 hours.

The key thing to know: express tans don’t develop faster; they simply let you rinse earlier. Your color continues to deepen and settle just like any other spray tan.

Is an Express Tan Better Than a Standard Tan?

Neither option is better across the board; it really comes down to timing and preference. Express tans are ideal if you have plans the same day, don’t want bronzer transferring onto sheets, or prefer more flexibility with your schedule. Standard tans are still a great choice if you’re comfortable with the overnight routine and like sticking to a traditional rinse window.

Both can deliver a beautiful, even result when applied properly.

My Professional Take

Express spray tans are one of the most convenient options available, especially for clients juggling events, travel, or tight timelines. You can absolutely achieve a rich, natural-looking glow with an express tan by simply leaving it on longer before rinsing. The biggest difference isn’t the final color, it’s the freedom.

The most important factor is working with a spray tan artist who understands rinse timing, undertones, and how to customize the formula to your skin and goals.

If you’re in L.A. and unsure which option makes the most sense for you, I’m always happy to guide you. At L.A. Sun Spray Tan, I offer both express and traditional airbrush tans and help clients choose what works best for their schedule — and their glow.
